Like a lot of people, I get behind reading the local news. But, today, I regret catching up.
I remember reading a few months ago about a Bible school teacher accused of some sort of crime but I didn't read the details and never followed the story.
Today, I read my News and Observer dated August 18th and I was dismayed to learn what happened to this so-called leader and of his conviction of sexual abuse of young boys. Because I do not have the stomach to rehash the incident here, you can read the article for yourself.
Superior Court Judge Ripley Rand sentenced Brian Goodrich Jr. to state prison, but I hardly think that 13 years is enough. People who commit crimes such as this can never be rehabilitated. They know what they are doing is wrong, but they just can't control themselves and they can never rid themselves of their urges. They have abnormal desires for young children that we parents spend our days trying to protect. They will almost certainly offend again and ruin the lives of more young children.
The parents placed their sons in this bible study, at an otherwise excellent church, to help them grow spiritually. The boys and their parents put their trust in Goodrich and expected to grow as followers of Jesus. As a seminary student, Goodrich seemed like the man for the job. However, he betrayed everyone.
My regular readers know that I'm the mother of a two-year-old, and today, I'm a MAD mother! I'm especially mad at this criminal's attorney. Joe Cheshire actually told the media that he recognized a desire in Goodrich to rehabilitate himself. Of course Goodrich wants to "rehabilitate" himself! He doesn't want to have to do any more time than he has to. He wants all to be forgiven so he can be let back out on the street to re-offend if allowed. Further, Goodrich has been caught by Raleigh police before.
What is it with our society that forces parents like me to worry each day? Yes, we can protect them at age 2. But as my son grows, he will gain independence and want to go places with his friends, like church. I want him to grow just as much as these boys' parents did. Yet, our legal system is allowing a revolving door at the county jail.
Luckily for Goodrich, he can participate in all the homosexual activity he desires in prison. But, while there, he cannot ruin another child's life.

Writer's Note: I chose not to name the church, as I have found it to be an excellent source of inspiration for so many of my friends in the Raleigh area.
