North Carolina State Representative and NCGOP National Committeeman, David Lewis, filed the following reports for Katy's Conservative Corner. KCC welcomes Rep. Lewis and looks forward to more updates!
Convention Opening Day: September 1, 2008
I am writing this greeting from the Floor of the Excel Center.
The North Carolina Delegation has wonderful seats. Our Delegation is seated literally 12 rows from the podium. It looks like all the attention Obama has given our state has helped elevate our importance.
The Excel Center itself is not very large and it is laid out in such a way as to feel very intimate. No matter where you are sitting you can really see the faces of everybody.
Of course, the topic of conversation is the flooding in New Orleans. My thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors on the Gulf. All of the attendees are very focused on finding some way to help those folks out. We have discussed everything from care packages-which we will do tomorrow, to a fund raiser and blood drive. I can honestly say that I have never seen a group of people so focused and driven to help their neighbors. I am very proud of the way the Party and McCain Campaigns have focused on toning down the campaign and focusing energy on those in need.
In fact, the McCain Campaign actually chartered a plane for any Delegates from Louisiana, Mississippi or Texas to be able to go home.
Today’s Convention will do only the bare minimum required to start the process. We will have very little actual “political” stuff and will instead do the “procedural” stuff like approving the rules. We were supposed to meet from 2:30 until 10. We have been told we will be out by 5:30.
Sen. Richard Burr spoke this morning and did a great job. He made a strong point by saying that we would win in November because of the strength of our message-not the length of our Convention.
I will send further updates later today.

Hello from Minneapolis!
I am very excited to be attending the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, MN.
Minneapolis is a beautiful city. I have been really impressed. Something that I have never seen before is that, in downtown Minneapolis, each building is connected on the 2nd floor skywalk. The skywalk is there because during the winter, this is the coldest city in America. There are many days when the wind chill factor is -25 degrees below zero. It is really interesting to see that the older buildings have older sky walks and the new buildings have newer sky walks. I have just never seen such an intricate system of pedestrian traffic.
Today I went the Convention Hall and they had really interesting displays. There is a collection of US flags dating back to the 1700’s. While I knew that the US flag had different “numbers” of stars on the flags-I never knew we actually had different designs for the stars. For example, when West Virginia succeeded from Virginia during the Civil War, Congress added their star much larger and in the center of the blue background.
I was also amazed by a small replica of the White House Rose Garden. It actually has real roses. They smell as sweet and look as beautiful as any flowers I have ever seen. It is so impressive that the planners used real roses.
I was also overwhelmed by the Abraham Lincoln Display. Not only did they have various actual items used by President Lincoln, they had an incredibly moving “Four Minute History of the Civil War” that showed battle by battle the number of people that died during this struggle. I am embarrassed to say that I had forgotten that more than 1 million people died. It also showed the ever changing boundaries of the Confederate State and the United States and how each battle literally moved the boundaries.
All in all, it was a great day. I am very concerned with the impending hurricane heading toward some Gulf Coast City. My prayers go out to those folks.
Editor's Note: Look for more posts from Rep. Lewis as the week progresses! KCC appreciates his exclusive dispatches from the convention!
