Friday, outgoing NC Democratic Party Chairman, Jerry Meek, sent a letter of thanks to his fellow Democrats. Read, in his words, exactly what REPUBLICANS need in our next chairman. Your blogger has highlighted a few points below:
1. Someone who will work as a full-time Chairman
2. Someone who promotes the use of Technology and either understands it, or hires someone who does.
3. Someone who understands the importance of the grassroots and can re-build our party from the bottom up.
4. Someone who can articulate a clear message for our party.
4. Someone who won't mind walking door-to-door with activists and who isn't afraid to get his/her hands dirty.
5. Someone who can raise the necessary funds to get our message out.
Meek's letter is below. Your blogger cannot argue with their success and with our own party elections upcoming, we must elect someone who can do what he has done and take it to the next level.
We can't try to duplicate Meek. It's too late for that. The Democrats have moved on. We Republicans have been behind. We have to work to keep up, much less CATCH UP! But we can do it. The Democrats think they can hang on in 2010 and beyond. Let's prove 'em wrong!
Dear Fellow Democrat:
Four years ago, I had the honor of being elected to serve you as the Chair of our great Party.
Since then, what an amazing journey it has been. Working together, we've built our Party from the bottom-up, by restoring the vitality of our grassroots organizations, expanding our base, and using technology in new and exciting ways. And when I leave office on Saturday, I'll leave a State Party in sound financial condition, completely debt free for the first time in recent memory.
I can't honestly say that every moment of this full-time, volunteer position has been fun. But I'll always cherish the many friends that I've met in this role. I'll always remember walking door-to-door with activists all across our State; the excitement of our first Sanford-Hunt Dinner; the many hundreds of hours spent on the road, traveling to local Party meetings. And I'll always know that - like you - I played some role in delivering North Carolina's electoral votes for President Barack Obama.
As I turn my full attention to my work as a partner with Poyner Spruill LLP, I want you to know that I'll still be involved. I look forward to working with my successor to ensure an orderly transition and to help continue the work that we've begun. I can think of no greater tribute to my tenure than for the successes of the last four years to become mere footnotes to the successes of 2010.
So, thank you. Thanks for the most incredible four years of my life. Thanks for your praise when I've done well and for your patience when I haven't lived up to your expectations. Thanks for your friendship, your prayers, and your encouragement. Most of all, thanks for being a Democrat.
With Best Wishes,
Jerry Meek
Chair
N.C. Democratic Party
