Recently, Henry Hinton hosted former Democratic House Speaker, Lt. Col. Joe Mavretic (USMC-R) on his radio show, "Talk of the Town". The show is popular down east, where Gubernatorial candidate Beverly Perdue claims her strongest base.
Speaker Mavretic is a frequent panelist on popular television show "NC Spin". His bio states, in part, that Joe was born in Currituck County, graduated from New Bern High School (your blogger's alma mater), then UNC Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned a Masters at George Washington and was a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College. He was a Marine fighter pilot, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Joe returned to North Carolina and was elected to the North Carolina General Assembly in 1980. Serving a total of 15 years, Joe became nationally known when he made history by successfully leading a bi-partisan effort to oust long-time House Speaker Liston Ramsey. Joe served as Speaker from 1989-90.
He is well-respected as a major player in all parts of the state, especially by Democrats who had no say under the oppressive Ramsey. He is remembered as a hero in North Carolina state politics.
Mavretic doesn't appreciate Perdue's "messages" where her surrogates do the attacking for her. He says he's "never been a fan of Perdue and says her entire career is based on 'flip flops'". Like your blogger, he'd like to see her show off her dirty hands and give up the fake syrupy image.
