Editor's Note: Please help Rep. Paul Stam defeat the extremely liberal Ed Ridpath. A virtual socialist, Ridpath is a longtime sponsor of the leftist blog, BlueNC. Democrats have painted a huge target on Stam's back and Ridpath is well-financed. Stam deserves our help and we need to keep him in the State House this year, and beyond. The Democrats want Stam out, and are fighting hard to do just that.
Stam is our House Republican leader and he has worked hard in this position, traveling our state to help elect fellow Republicans. Everywhere you blogger goes, Rep. Stam is there.
Please read this important letter from Rep. Stam and help him in these final hours. Thank you.
Friends,
April 19th is an important milestone in our campaign for re-election to the State House.
First, a little history. I am currently serving my 8th year in the State House (but not continuously). I served in 1989-90 in my youth. I returned to the House in 2003 to find a radically changed General Assembly. Autocracy and intimidation were in vogue. Democracy wasn’t. Unfortunately the House also included some criminal elements: former Speaker Jim Black, Rep. Michael Decker, and Rep. Thomas Wright. They are all now in prison.
We have made progress. There was some real ethic reform last year. And recently, for the first time in 128 years, the House expelled a member for misconduct.
In 2007 my Republican House colleagues chose me as their Leader. One of my jobs is to change our minority into a majority. I spent November – February recruiting. We found 15 great new candidates for the House. If 9 of them can win we will become the majority. Why does that matter? Under the current rules, the majority exercises the right to veto bills they do not want heard.
But I have to pay some attention to my own candidacy. Although we prevailed against the same opponent in 2006, he claims fantastic success so far. I enclose a portion of his published platform and his report to his contributors.
I think you know my platform. See www.paulstam.info. I am conservative. He is very liberal.
He is right, however, on one point. April 19th is the last day of the financial reporting period. Handicappers and political prognosticators will use the reports that are filed as of April 19th as a way to judge who is winning. And while he has been concentrating on this district I have been working on 15 others. Will you help me show financial strength as of April 19 by making a contribution? All the rules are set out below. Thank you so much.
Sincerely yours,
Rep. Paul Stam
