Eric,
You are a nice person, and I've enjoyed talking to you and getting to know you during your campaign for Supt of Public Instruction. I was all set to endorse you on this blog and was working on a nice video piece. However, after reading Ryan Teague Beckwith's piece about you, I have concerns.
It's not the pot smoking or the "Pot Smokers Club" that bothered me. I certainly believe you when you say you have long left your high school lifestyle behind. Hopefully, we all have.
It's the fact that you are a closet Libertarian. Your old My Space Page, that Ryan Beckwith (of the N and O) dug up, shows how you tried to start a Libertarian club in community college. (It's all there, on that forgotten, old My Space page, see below.)
I have a problem, a huge problem with the Libertarians trying to mask themselves as Republicans to win elections. You guys had your own party and when it tanked, you have been trying to slip into ours.
Our once-proud party is not what it was, and many of us are fighting hard to restore the GOP to its former conservative glory at the national, state, and local levels across this nation.
Now, not only do we have to fight off the RINOs like disgraced former House co-speaker Richard Morgan, we also have to deal with the Libertarians who are trying to take over our party. Some days it seems like too much!
People like Morgan sold our party out to the Democrats in Raleigh and closet Libertarians are trying to take over. What's happening to the rest of us...the true conservatives?
Look at brave Michael Munger. He's out there fighting for the Libertarian cause and I respect him because he's truthful about his principles. He may not win, but he's out there running for Governor on the Libertarian ticket.
While conservatives agree with some Libertarian principles, we won't agree on many MAJOR points. For example, BJ Lawson (left), a Libertarian running as a Republican in the 4th District Congressional primary, will tell anyone he supports the legalization of drugs and that he wants immediate pull-out of US troops. (Lawson calls himself a "lifelong Republican", but his website and foreign policy matches up to that of the Libertarian platform.) He even appeared at the Wake Libertarian Party's Convention last weekend.
I realize that you won't deal with these issues as Supt. of Public Instruction, but it's the principle. We don't need more Libertarians in our once-fine party.
Alarm bells sounded when you told me Vernon Robinson (left) recruited you, but I guess I wanted to ignore it. Vernon has been bad news for years.
Now in the GOP primary, we've got an anti-gun youngster in his mid-20s (Joe Johnson), a Democrat-loving disgraced former co-speaker (Richard Morgan), and now a Libertarian in the race for school supt. Morgan is making a lot of noise in this race and we really need you to help us win the good fight.
I was also upset when you told me that State Party Chairman Linda Daves went to Vernon to find a candidate. Vernon is no longer one of us, and is only pretends to be a true conservative.
My mother used to tell me that I was, in part, who I associated with.
I wish you the best, but Scotty, beam me up!
Sadly,
Katy
