Supporters of Ron Paul, the Libertarian presidential candidate who is a registered Republican, are educating themselves on the process of becoming delegates at the North Carolina Republican Convention, usually held the weekend after Memorial Day. The photo, left, shows the "Ron Paul Express" at the 2007 GOP Convention, held in Charlotte.
Their goal is to get as many committed Ron Paul delegates elected to the Republican National Convention as possible, to ensure that their candidate has a say in the nomination process. This effort in the state conventions is happening nationwide. Naturally, they prefer for Paul to be the nominee.
Katy's Conservative Corner has obtained an email, sent to Ron Paul supporters, which warns that if the Republican party finds out,"they may try to exclude you from being a delegate". Part of the message is below:
"Those who support Ron Paul must begin the process now of getting elected as a delegate to the convention. Please do not tell those involved in the decision-making process for selecting delegates that you support Ron Paul. If they figure this out, they may try to exclude you from becoming a delegate."
Clearly, Paul's supporters know that he is not universally loved among Republican loyalists. However, they are carefully crafting a plan to become a part of the process, rather than move around it.
Paul's supporters are dedicated and keep informed via the Internet and other electronic media. They organize efforts so that Paul nearly always makes a good showing in online polling, despite his dismal numbers in telephone and group polling.
The 2008 NC GOP convention is to be held in Greensboro. Details to come.
