An e-mail obtained by Katy's Conservative Corner from "Jane", a member of Code Pink NC, shows that the Saturday protesters In Smithfield and at the Johnston County airport, feared for their safety. Yet many of these same people were expressing to your blogger their pride at having been arrested at their last protest.
Read on and judge for yourself. The full text of the email follows:
"Many thanks for coming to the Rally today. There were 13 of us from UUFR that I counted...Sally does not have e mail. For those who missed the final portion of the afternoon let me tell you.
There were probably about 100 who showed up at the top of the road which led to the gates of Aero. As we arrived we could see that the Eagles (I know they have a more complete name, but I don't know it yet) were already assembled in front of the Aero gate at the end of the road. And they were shouting insults, blowing whistles etc. .
We had a prayer from the new Social Outreach Mennonite minister connected with the Council of Churches. Roger spoke about his grandfather who spoke out in Germany and was one of the first to die in Dachau concentration camp. They asked for other volunteer speakers (readers) and after each reader a group of 8-10 proceeded down the road toward the gates carrying a photo of a person who had suf fered torture or had disappeared Jim,Sally and I were in about the fifth group to go down (the send off for each group was chanting, "we are all one") and when we got toward the end of the walk we had to squeeze through the leather jacketed , flag carrying eagles who gave way for the most part and we hung our pictures on the Aero fence. (the eagles had some parts of the fence blocked and told us we would have to deal with them before we hung our pictures there....)
So we moved a bit away and found an unguarded space to hang our portraits. There were only two State police officers present that I could see which made me a bit nervous, but on the way out I noticed at least three vans full of soldier like people who looked like they had on life jackets, and found out there were members of a SWAT team and as many more sheriff's cars.. So we were very well protected. It did cause the adrenalin to rise, but I was very glad that it was a peaceful protest as planned. Again, thank you all for takin the time to come. Love Jane"
KCC was on the scene in Johnston County, on Saturday and witnessed it all. Much of the above email is misleading.
These "portraits" were nothing more than generic outlines of faces with names on them such as "grandpa", "great-uncle", "aunt", etc.
Your blogger only noticed ONE actual photo of a person and it was so pixilated that it wasn't easy to tell if the photo was actually a real person or not.
It seems odd to this blogger that these people feared for their safety from "leather jacket wearing" conservatives. I have been in Washington DC as a worker and tourist many times, and feared for my own life, as militants have gotten in my face and yelled at me. I was simply walking up to the Capitol to go in, as its my favorite building in town.
This so-called extremism goes both ways, but luckily for all parties involved in Johnston County on Saturday, the police (except for one) and sheriff's department was professional and respectful. The police in Washington, DC see protesters daily and don't react nearly as quickly to altercations.
KCC was accosted by one senior member of the Smithfield PD who kicked our tripod. Luckily, that "mother of all tripods" is quite sturdy. No complaints here.
