I found this fun photo on the Raleigh Chronicle website today and couldn't have laughed harder. Meeker (D-Raleigh), who never met a tax he didn't like, and a government program he didn't love, is also downtown aleigh's biggest backer.
To the detriment of the rest of the city, Meeker has an "insane" focus on government funding for downtown Raleigh, so we can be as "great" as other same-sized cities. As we stated in an earlier post, downtown Raleigh died a fair death years ago. In fact, the city contributed to it in large part!
I can understand why folks want to bring downtown back. As a history buff, I enjoy trooping through downtown to imagine what was where, when. Additionally, I lived on Devereux Street for 13 years and loved the area. But, time moves on and taxpayer pockets and purses are limited. There is only so much blood you can get out of a turnip.
Raleigh has spread far beyond its original borders and has grown to include the far reaches of Wake County. Let's not forget that people there are Raleigh citizens, too. Let's lay off the government programs, lower our taxes, and quit spending so much. I hate to see what Mayor Meeker's household budget looks like! He probably spends everything on the living room, and neglects the rest of the house.
