Driving With One Hand Kevin LeCount is apparently driving with his LEFT hand, as this blog is written by my good friend who works for SEANC, the union of the NC State Employees. His wife, Heidi, works at my alma mater, Meredith and are good folks, despite their political leanings. Check them out.
Your blogger and her young son just returned from a nice dog walk, in this beautiful weather today. On that walk, she met a nice woman named Heidi who was with her grandson, just a little older than our Bobby.
She got into a car that I'd noticed around a lot lately, most specifically because it had a sticker noting that she'd lost a loved one to a drunk driver. Things like that hit your blogger hard, and she prays that nothing like that will ever happen in her family.
After Heidi got into her car, KCC told her "I'm so sorry for your loss." Heidi started to cry, as it had not even been one year since her son was killed while leaving a hockey game.
On April 27, 2009, he was on his way home and a drunk driver killed him and left him for dead.
Heidi said authorities didn't find her son's body for three days. Just his smashed up car, she told this blogger, through her tears.
Your blogger often wonders why people STILL drink and drive, after all these years. The data is clear. Drinking and driving kills. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has been around seemingly "forever" telling these same sad stories. Yet people continue to commit these offenses.
Heidi's son's killer only received 23 months in prison and will probably serve 1/2 of it. These days, you get 1 day off for every day you serve with "good behavior" due to prison overcrowding. Therefore, this idiot can get out again and do the same thing.
(Personally, KCC has a zero tolerance policy. It's not worth it for this writer to have even one single drink and then drive. The costs could be too great.)
KCC told Heidi that she would be in our prayers tonight. But we have another request.
Please keep Heidi in your prayers, too. She's lost a huge part of herself and her world. Please pray that Heidi will be comforted in her loss, especially with the month of April and that horrible anniversary coming up.
Please remember all those who have been victims of this horrible tragedy and be safe on the roads this weekend.
Readers, thank you for allowing KCC to step off the political plank just for a moment today.
This morning, Tom Fetzer, chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, called for the resignation of two major figures in Governor Beverly Perdue's administration.
During her campaign, Perdue promised to transform state government and make it transparent. Clearly, that hasn't happened (pun intended.) In short, Fetzer wants the NC Governor to clean up state Government or be prepared to face the consequences (at election time).
A copy of the press release from the NC GOP follows:
NCGOP Chairman Tom Fetzer today called on Governor Bev Perdue to remove from their positions Alvin Keller, Secretary of the Department of Corrections, and Reuben Young, Secretary of the Department of Crime Control and Public Safety. Fetzer also called on Perdue to convene a panel of journalists to determine barriers to access to public records and have those barriers lifted immediately.
Fetzer referenced Young’s time serving as former Governor Mike Easley’s Chief Legal Council, saying that Young failed to properly investigate claims that the Governor’s office instructed employees to delete emails. Fetzer charged that “Young either orchestrated the cover-up or observed it with a casual indifference.”
Fetzer also noted Young’s inclusion in the recent Ruffin Poole indictment, where Young failed to properly investigate the Easley staffer about being taken on a private jet to New Orleans for a bachelor party thrown by an Easley supporter. Fetzer said Young is a “holdover from the incompetence and corruption of the Easley administration” and that Perdue should dismiss him from his current post immediately.
Fetzer outlined Keller’s lack of results as the head of Corrections, including his poor handling of problems surrounding the state’s probation system. Keller had made filling vacancies of parole officers his #1 priority; but the number of parole officers actually went down during his tenure. Recently, Keller has refused media requests to release records showing the details of supervision of those out on probation and backpedaled on his ordered to release prisoners who were sentenced to life in prison.
According to Fetzer, a lack of internal checks and balances has left it to the media and private “watchdog” groups to uncover corruption in state government. Fetzer said he believed even more problems would be discovered if access to public records was easier. He proposed that the Governor put together a panel of journalist and members of concerned citizens groups to identify the obstacles that stand in the way of access to public records.
“The governor should listen to common sense recommendations from those who know what the obstacles are and then, using whatever is within her power as Governor, implement reform by executive order.”
“Bev Purdue has called herself the ‘Education Governor’ and then promptly signed a budget that slashed education. She called herself the ‘Jobs Governor’ when unemployment increased on her watch. It’s time ‘Business as Usual Bev’ started backing up her rhetoric when it comes to ethics and transparency,” Fetzer concluded.

*Congratulations to the group NC Freedom on their first anniversary. This group is not affiliated with any other group, nationally or locally, but shares related information from bloggers and associated groups with those who sign up for its mailing list. Their newsletter editor, Sharon Sbrocco, told your blogger that the first year has been productive and that she looks forward to their Convention of the People - Initiative I. Check it out here.
*KCC will be an official blogger at CPAC in Washington, as a representative from NC. Held every February, the meeting brings thousands of conservatives together to ignite their collective spirits and hear inspiring speakers.
We are extremely excited to see friends that we only see at national events, and it appears that there are a number of North Carolinians going, as well. Please say hello to us while there, if possible!
We'll also run the proceedings live on this blog, in the event. This may come in handy if you don't have access to a television during your workday, for example.
*Our friend over at the ARRA News Service in Arkansas, Dr. Bill Smith, has an excellent article on Nancy Pelosi's Food and Booze Tab. Drawn from research done at Judicial Watch, this short piece will make your cry for our once great nation. In fact, Dr. Bill's blogs are excellent and we highly recommend them all.
On a side note, Dr. Bill told this KCC that he spends so many hours per week on his blog, that he often doesn't come out of his office for days at the time. He works incredibly hard to keep the citizens of Arkansas, and the nation informed.
Agent Delbert Richburg Immigration and Customs Enforcement ~ Charlotte District Office 6130 Tyvola Centre Drive Charlotte, NC 28217
Subject ~ Illegal aliens at Biltmore Park
Dear Agent Richburg:
Earlier in the week I received a call and follow-up visit from a tradesman who had recently been laid off from the large scale work project at Biltmore Park in Asheville. This is a site of on-going major construction involving 12+ large structures. His issue of contention was the significant number of "illegal" workers employed by the various sub-contractors on the site.
To give you a sense of scale of this development project, the City of Asheville has a full-time on-site inspection service on the property that I attempted to visit today. During that visit I had the opportunity to observe that a significant number of the workers (I would estimate 50% of those I observed and/or spoke to directly) were of Latino descent. I spoke to 6+ subgroups that did not speak English - several did speak Spanish.
The gentleman who escorted me through the site offered that his co-workers routinely acknowledged being in the country illegally and working either under the table or through the use of false identification. I, of course, have no evidence with which to accuse these workers or their employers of breaking the law. Nonetheless, statistically 50-70% of those not speaking English are in the state/country illegally.
I am bringing this project to your attention specifically due to the large number of workers on site. I am also aware that your one visit to Mills Manufacturing has probably created more jobs for WNC (Western North Carolina) than the City's economic development efforts for the year. Arvato, formerly Sonopress, may be known to you as the company down the road from Mills where 50+ employees left the plant during your Mills raid. That company is to be commended for their subsequent efforts to hire legal citizens and authentically credentialed workers. Others have followed suit.
As an aside, the 2 elevator shafts in the six story Hilton hotel that is currently under construction were fully exposed on three observed floors. I appreciate your continued efforts to enforce legal immigration in Asheville and WNC .
Carl Mumpower Asheville City Council
EDITOR'S NOTES: The author, Dr. Carl Mumpower (left, campaigning in 2008), ran unsuccessfully for US Congress in our state's 11th District, due to a huge Democrat tide, which voted closet liberal Heath Shuler back into office.
With Shuler expected to challenge Senator Richard Burr in 2010, thus leaving the 11th District seat open, the timing would be ripe for a Republican, such as Mumpower, to take the seat. Your blogger proudly endorsed Mumpower in 2008 and does so again, here.
If there is no "Draft Mumpower" movement for 2010, let it begin now. Not only was he not afraid of the Asheville liberal establishment, he was also not afraid of those in his own party.
We need Mumpower in Congress. We need his fearless ability to stand up to the establishment, even to those, such as the the Republican National Committee (RNC). Mumpower and others were vindicated when those old RNC "leaders" were recently thrown out of office, and instead voted in the more conservative Michael Steele and a completely new team.
Mumpower is the lone conservative on a "crunchy, granola" city council in Asheville, and is used to standing up for what he believes in, often when he is alone! That stance reminds this blogger of the late Jesse Helms, who often proudly stood alone, and never folded when he believed he was right.
