According to the Raleigh News and Observer's Under the Dome, North Carolina residents with concealed Carry permits may now take them into national parks, such as the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Smokey Mountains National Park, as long as they follow all rules that go along with such permits.
This is good news for this blogger, who has such a permit and has long desired to take her handgun with her on mountain biking trips for personal protection. Often, while riding in the wilderness in the NC mountains, your blogger has encountered a variety of scary people and wild animals. Shooting them would be the absolute last option, but at least it IS an option, now.
Dome's writer stated, "U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, a Winston-Salem Republican and a hunter, was among a bipartisan group of lawmakers pushing for change. He had co-sponsored legislation that would have allowed guns in parks."
Burr is up for re-election in 2010 and your blogger will be covering that election, as always.
